Drew tries to learn about Licenses

Sat Aug 1, 2009, 6:57 PM
  • Mood: Confused
  • Listening to: "Seasons" by the Veer Union
  • Reading: The Amazing Spider-Man: Brand New Day
  • Watching: Get Backers
  • Playing: Alone in the Dark: Inferno
  • Eating: Subway
  • Drinking: Dr. Pepper
So I was posting some new deviations earlier (which by the way, you guys should have a look see) and on my way finalizing my submission I took an eye for the three buttons at the bottom of the SUBMIT DEVIATION page. Now, I normally just skip through these things and go straight to the part where I show other people my art, afterall, they do say it's Optional.

I decided to try it out anyway though, and was immediately puzzled by the CHOOSE LICENSE one. For one, it read "with a Creative Commons license, you can allow people to use, copy, and share your work while giving you credit." So is that really true? Others can take out my work here from Deviantart and then use it for miscellaneous purposes but I still get credit for it? How does that really work though? How is it different from simply putting a watermark on each of my entries?

I'm asking other people here on DA to see if anybody uses this feature or knows about it to some extent. How does Creative Commons really work? And, does it give me more security when it comes to posting my art online?

Anybody here willing to guide a confused young man?
